Executive Director Bootcamp

Associations often ask me to run this program for their membership.

Often, nonprofit leaders grow in their careers because they have a passion for the cause but they weren’t necessarily given the training to thrive in their role. As a former nonprofit executive, Kari provides the essential guide you may have missed, addressing time management, self-care, coaching for staff and volunteers, board development, fundraising, community engagement, and succession planning. By the end of this cohort, you will leave with a complete set of resources to confidently assume your leadership responsibilities.

Ideal Attendee

New nonprofit executive directors

Executive directors who have been on the job but want to improve their performance

Areas of Focus

Self-care and time management

Success as a nonprofit leader starts with you. We’ll look at how you spend your time, who you spend your time with, strategically managing your calendar, and prioritizing critical work. We’ll work together to craft a schedule that works for you to accomplish your best work at work and at home.

Staff and volunteer coaching

Delegation is an important part of leadership.

How to hold effective and energizing team huddles, one-on-one staff and volunteer meetings.

Coaching up and coaching out.

You’ll leave with tools to shift the workload to everyone involved with your organization.

Board – director relations and board development: Hear the sounds of a tango? The board-ED dance and developing the board are among the most important aspects of serving as a nonprofit executive. With stats that say you’ll only stay 18-24 months if this relationship sours, digging deep into your role as dance partner is critical. I’ll share some “to-dos, and not to-dos” from my time in the field.

Fundraising and community outreach

You’re the chief rainmaker and the face of your organization! You need to build relationships to raise money, awareness, and credibility in your community. Daily.

Succession planning and systems for success.

People. We all leave. Whether that means retirement, a new opportunity, or burnout, we still need to leave the joint healthier than we found it. We’ll discuss templates and planning systems that help sort out the work that must be done and systems to create efficiencies, both while you’re there and transitioning. You’ll also receive tools to start conversations with your board about their succession planning, too!

Board of Directors Master Class

Boards play an essential role in the success of any organization. While most board members have the best intentions, they may not know what their role is (and isn’t). Strengthening the practice of nonprofit boards within a community will lead to more effective and sustainable results.

This interactive, hands-on workshop will cover board responsibilities, operations, development, fundraising, and advocacy. The resources were developed in partnership with some of the nation’s leading board experts. You will leave with concrete action steps, tools, and connections.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

For board members and the people who work with them. It offers ideas for new board members and those who have served for a long time. It is appropriate for organizations of all sizes, whether they have staff or not.

This four-hour session includes the five core responsibilities that nonprofit board members assume when choosing to serve on a nonprofit board. They include:

Connection to cause

Roles and responsibilities (group and individual)
