Untangle the Board-Executive Director Relationship: An Incite Short Course
To have a high-functioning, effective nonprofit, it is critical for the executive director and the board of directors to understand and appreciate their distinct roles. As a general rule of thumb, the board of directors primarily governs and staff primarily manages the organization. A board that is overly active in management can inhibit the organization’s effectiveness. An Executive Director that is autocratic ensures that the board is just a “rubber stamp” and can’t fulfill their roles of “Duty of Care, Loyalty and Obedience”.
When you have completed Untangle the Board-Executive Director Relationship Short Course, you’ll have a matrix of “who does what and why” based on the make up of your nonprofit. You’ll have a list of nonprofit best practices related to board work and the work of the executive. Plus, you’ll develop a list of discussion items to work through as a team to strengthen this relationship.
